CoMo200 Celebrates the Founding of Smithton

 

 

Columbia, MO – November 8, 2018 – CoMo200, the Mayor's Task Force for Bicentennial Planning, will celebrate the founding of Smithton on Sunday from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Smithton, the settlement that was the precursor to the founding of Columbia, was established in 1818. The event will take place at 33 East Broadway in the parking lot of RE/MAX Realty, which is near the site where Smithton was formed.

 

Speakers at the event will begin at 12:30 p.m. and feature Columbia Mayor Brian Treece, CoMo200 Chair Brent Gardner, and Richard Mendenhall in character as Robert S. Barr, a Smithton trustee. The winner of the CoMo200 Columbia Public Schools T-shirt design contest also will be recognized and a mock-up of a historic plaque to be placed at the Smithton site next year will be unveiled.

 

CoMo200 was created in February 2018 and its members are charged with organizing citywide events that are historical, educational and honor Columbia's rich history in anticipating of its bicentennial in May 2021.
