WIRE FRAUD

All –

We have had an instance of a wire fraud attempt.

Here was the scenario:

Email came from (what looked like) the title company asking for the buyers email address.  Agent sent back the buyer’s email address .  Buyer then received an email from (what looked like) the agent asking them for their wiring instructions.  Luckily our agent had just sent the Cyber Crime Notice and so the buyer contacted the agent asking if the email was for real.  BE ON ALERT AND ALERT YOUR CLIENTS

Action steps:

  1. Make sure the disclaimer is included in your email correspondence (see below)
  2. ALWAYS Provide the cybercrime notice form to your clients
  3. Always make a practice of looking at the reply address to see if the address is one you know or something strange.  Email addresses for fraud tend to look similar, but are off by one letter or a few.
  4. Make sure your clients know not to wire to anyone unknown and only if you have asked them verbally.
